Five km south of Epernay begin the famous "Côte des Blancs" where there are 5 villages : Chouilly, Cramant, Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil sur Oger. The subsoil is built up of limestones and belemnites (fossils) of an impressive depht on the side of the slope. In this region, there is only Chardonnay (white grapes) wich is why you will notice "Blanc de Blancs" (white of white) on the bottles produced in these famous villages.
